Pengaruh Tekanan Udara terhadap Ketinggian

 

Tekanan udara adalah tekanan yang ditimbulkan oleh beratnya lapisan-lapisan udara. Suatu tekanan didapat dari gaya per satuan luas yang bekerja pada suatu bidang di dalam ruang. Hal ini dapat dipahami bahwa setiap lapisan udara yang di bawah mendapat tekanan udara dari atasnya.

 

 

 

 

Alat untuk mengukur tekanan udara disebut barometer. Hubungan tekanan udara dengan ketinggian suatu tempat, semakin tinggi permukaan bumi akan semakin rendah tekanan udaranya. Karena laju penurunan tekanan udara berbanding lurus dengan laju penurunan suhu, sehingga ketika di dataran tinggi tekanan udara semakin rendah sehingga suhu udarapun menurun. Tekanan udara di permukaan laut sama dengan 1 atmosfer (1 atm = 76 cmHg) dan setiap kenaikan 100 meter, tekanan udara berkurang 1. Hubungan antara tekanan udara dengan ketinggian dapat dilihat pada persamaan berikut:

P = tekanan pada ketinggian h

Pu = tekanan udara di permukaan air laut (1 atm = 76 cmHg)

h = tinggi suatu tempat.

Titik didih zat cair dipengaruhi oleh tekanan udara di atas permukaan zat cair. Semakin kecil tekanan udara di atas permukaan zat cair, semakin rendah titik didih zat cair tersebut. Di daerah dataran tinggi, tekanan udaranya lebih kecil daripada tekanan udara di daerah dataran rendah sehingga titik didih di daerah dataran tinggi lebih rendah daripada di daerah dataran rendah. Karena titik didihnya lebih rendah, air akan cepat mendidih.
