1.Why is diversity so important?

The data show that diversity is good for business. The truth is a little more complicated. Diversity is good for business when the organization knows how to truly embrace, value, and make use of diversity in its leadership and workforce. Why? 

Because when managers and leaders know how to draw out diverse perspectives, build on them, and be inclusive of all the perspectives available on their teams, they get better ideas, question assumptions, identify blind spots, develop new approaches, and create better solutions. As a result, they see massive team innovation, performance, and growth.

2. Function over form?

One of the key features of English as a Lingua Franca is the acceptance of forms that would be considered “non-standard” by the usual English as a Foreign Language norm. For example, while omitting the third-person – in the Present Simple; using who or which interchangeably; or not using an article where “the” should go would be deemed mistakes in a regular EFL classroom, in the context of ELF they are generally accepted and do not necessarily hinder comprehension. These liberties that ELF speakers may take are often the reason why critics of this lingua franca deem it as nothing more than “foreigner speak” or “Bad Spoken English”. Even though ELF lacks a definite list of the accepted variations, this does not mean it is not a variety worthy of analyzing.

4. The Future of ELF?

As more and more people come in contact with English from an early age (through e.g. the use of social media or video games), more language learning apps such as Duolingo are developed, and the recent changes in the working life due to the COVID-19 pandemic, English will continue to be widely use to communicate, trade, and interact with the rest of the world. Despite the criticisms and disdain for concepts like ELF, it cannot be denied that lingua franca, imperfect as they may be, in the long run help us to connect with other people, which ultimately is the essence of any language. Only the future will tell if the simplifications proposed by English as a Lingua Franca advocates can effectively be considered a variety of its own, as valid as any other English dialect.
