OPEN ENDED QUESTION

3 mins • 1 pt

In 1820, the Missouri Compromise was passed to keep peace between free states and slave states. At that time, the United States was growing quickly, and leaders worried about whether new states would allow slavery. The compromise drew an imaginary line across the Louisiana Territory at latitude 36°30′. States north of this line would be free, while states south of it could allow slavery. This agreement helped maintain a balance in Congress between free and slave states, but it did not solve the deeper conflict over slavery.

OPEN ENDED QUESTION

3 mins • 1 pt

As the country expanded westward, the question of slavery returned. In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act changed the rules set by the Missouri Compromise. Instead of following the old line, the act allowed settlers in Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery. This idea was called popular sovereignty. People from both sides rushed into Kansas to influence the vote. Pro-slavery settlers and abolitionists, who wanted to end slavery, clashed violently. Homes were burned, towns were attacked, and many people were killed. These bloody battles gave Kansas the nickname “Bleeding Kansas.”

In 2-3 sentences, summarize the above!
