As they continue, Tam Lin explains that their Safe Horse has an implant that forces it to follow commands, even when doing so could harm it.

At the beginning of Chapter 7, Tom swings Matt’s teddy bear by its ear and hits María with it, causing the ear to tear off; when Tom steps on the ear, Matt attacks him before Tam Lin separates the boys.

Later, Matt becomes frustrated with Teacher’s repetitive lessons, and his angry outburst restores his ability to speak.

To celebrate, Tam Lin takes Matt on a picnic, where Matt sees a Farm worker who has died in the poppy fields.

At the oasis, Tam Lin explains how Matt was cloned and reveals that eejits are people whose brain implants have removed their free will.

While exploring the music room, Matt discovers his talent for playing the piano, and Tam Lin arranges for Mr. Ortega to teach him.

Later at the party, Matt punishes Tom by moving him to the children’s table and then demands that María give him her present and kiss him.

Matt begins distance learning and discovers a secret passage hidden behind a closet in the music room.

Before El Patrón’s birthday celebration, Matt finds Furball trapped in a toilet and suspects that Tom put the dog there.

During the celebration, El Patrón announces that medical treatments have extended his life and that Mr. MacGregor will receive similar treatment.

After María reveals Tom’s role in the hospital incident, El Patrón banishes Tom to a year-round boarding school before leaving the estate with Tam Lin.

Hoping to speak with María, Matt hides Furball near the lotus pond, but the dog is later found dead and the evidence causes everyone to blame Matt.

Following the party, Tom and Felicia separately lure María and Matt to the hospital, where the children discover MacGregor’s suffering clone.

Finally, Celia tells Matt that the Farm Patrol captured her group at the border, turned the other migrants into eejits, and placed her under El Patrón’s control.

After Matt tells Celia what happened in the hospital, she explains that the law requires clones to receive an injection that destroys their intelligence, but El Patrón prevented this from happening to Matt.
