Creating a Hook

Read the three examples of a "Question Hook" below.  Which is the quality example that would hook a reader's interest?

• Can you protect someone from themselves?

• How far should you go to protect people from themselves?

• Have you ever helped someone?

Which quote below would be considered a quality hook?

• My mother always said, “The ultimate responsibility always lies within you, and the opportunities are the ones you create.”

• John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Which example is a quality example of setting the scene...think SHOW, don't tell.

• My mornings are crazy! It's hard for me to get to school on time.

• I awakened to the deafening screams of my alarm clock.  I fell as I yanked my blue jeans off the shelf; tripping over my loafers.  Sweat streamed down my back as I ran to the bus stop and I arrived as the black smoke of the bus signaled its departure.
