In Act 3, Scene 3 of Macbeth, hired murderers prepare to ambush Banquo and Fleance on a dark road. As Banquo and his son arrive and dismount, they are attacked. Banquo is killed, but his dying words urge Fleance to escape and avenge him. One murderer extinguishes the torch, allowing Fleance to flee in the darkness. The murderers then set off to inform Macbeth. Despite Macbeth's efforts to prevent Banquo's prophecy, Fleance's escape keeps the prophecy alive, suggesting that the witches' prophecies may be beyond Macbeth's control.
