Rahul Williams, a historian, discusses Joseph McCarthy's influence during the 1940s and 1950s. McCarthy, a Republican Senator, exploited fears of communism, claiming to have evidence of communists in the U.S. government. Despite lacking proof, he captivated the public with accusations against authors, activists, and officials. His tactics, known as red-baiting, forced many to defend their innocence. McCarthy's influence waned after the televised Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954, where he was publicly rebuked. He lost support and was censured by the Senate, dying in 1957. The video also touches on the rise of the Red Guards in China, who targeted political enemies of Mao and the Communist Party.
