In Chapter 24 of 'Things Fall Apart', Okonkwo and others are released after a fine is paid. They return to a village that is indifferent to their return. Okonkwo anticipates a meeting about war, feeling both bitterness and excitement. A released prisoner urges the clan to fight against the British, despite the risk of shedding blood. The meeting is interrupted by messengers, and Okonkwo kills one, but realizes there will be no war. He feels isolated and vows revenge, caught between traditional Igbo culture and European colonialism.
