Windbreaks are rows of trees and shrubs that protect areas from wind, provide food and cover for wildlife, and offer multiple benefits. They can consist of coniferous or a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees. Windbreaks protect farmsteads and feedlots from wind and snow, slowing wind on the downwind side for a distance of ten times the height of the trees. They reduce wind erosion, conserve energy, lower heating bills, and enhance the beauty of farmsteads.
