William Howard Taft, from a prominent Ohio family, was a skilled lawyer and judge. He excelled as the governor of the Philippines and served as Secretary of War under Teddy Roosevelt. Despite never running for office, he was elected President in 1908, continuing some Progressive policies like supporting income tax and antitrust lawsuits. However, his approach differed from Roosevelt's, leading to a split in the Republican Party. Taft's preference for legal solutions over political maneuvering alienated some Progressives. After losing the 1912 election, he achieved his lifelong dream of becoming Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
