Winnie Massons, a scientist at EA, discusses E. coli, a common gut bacterium. While most strains are beneficial, some are pathogenic and can cause illness. In 2011, a significant outbreak in Germany was linked to contaminated seeds. E. coli can spread through contaminated food, water, and contact with infected animals or humans. EFSA monitors these bacteria in food and investigates outbreaks. To prevent infection, refrigerate food, wash hands and produce, and cook meat thoroughly.
