In 1418 Florence, Filippo Brunelleschi, a goldsmith and clockmaker, was tasked with building a grand dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore without formal architectural training. He proposed a revolutionary design featuring an eight-sided dome with no central support, using two shells and interlocking rings. Ingenious machines were created to aid construction. The dome was built with precision, using guide ropes and a unique brick pattern. Despite the challenges, the dome was completed in 16 years and remains the largest masonry dome in the world.
