NATO, a political and military alliance between North America and Europe, was established in 1949 to counter Soviet aggression. It expanded from 12 to 28 members, including former Warsaw Pact countries. Article 5, a key principle, was invoked only after 9/11, leading to NATO's involvement in Afghanistan. Despite a 2006 agreement for members to spend 2% of GDP on defense, this target is rarely met, causing financial imbalance and friction. Donald Trump criticized NATO as obsolete, threatening to withdraw unless members paid their fair share. The US increased its military presence in Europe following Russia's actions in Ukraine.
