In Book Nine of the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is driven by grief for Enkidu and fear of death. He seeks Utnapishtim, the only man granted immortality, to learn how to escape death. Gilgamesh's journey takes him to the Twin Peaks, guarded by scorpion people, and through a dark tunnel he must traverse in 12 hours. Emerging into a divine garden, he reflects on his mortality and the loss of Enkidu, realizing life without his friend is a living death. The passage through the underworld symbolizes a potential rebirth, but Gilgamesh is not yet ready for transformation.
