Joseph Pilates, born in 1883, was influenced by his parents' beliefs in natural healing and physical fitness. Despite childhood illnesses, he developed a fitness regime that later became known as Pilates. During WWI, he innovated exercise equipment for bedridden soldiers, which evolved into modern Pilates machines. After the war, he moved to the US, where he and his wife Clara established a studio in New York, promoting 'Contrology'. His methods gained popularity among dancers and athletes. Pilates' legacy continues through his disciples and the widespread adoption of his techniques.
