In December 2022, Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted, sending ash and smoke into the air. The eruption affected Guatemala City and led to the temporary closure of the La Aurora International Airport. Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the region, with a history of eruptions every four to five years. Central America hosts over 100 volcanoes, many of which are tourist attractions. Unlike South America's snow-capped volcanoes, those in Central America are not due to the warmer climate. In 2022, there were 77 volcanic eruptions worldwide. Studies suggest climate change may accelerate volcanic activity.
