After the War of 1812, U.S. soldiers spread the word that Canada had abolished slavery, making it a safe haven for escaping slaves. Despite the challenges of reaching Canada, many slaves traveled north, crossing lakes and rivers to settle in Ontario, Quebec, and other provinces. Once in Canada, they faced new challenges, such as providing for themselves and their families, but they also gained rights like land ownership and voting.
