New Jersey was established in 1664 as a royal gift from James, Duke of York, to Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. The land was named New Jersey in honor of Carteret's defense of Jersey during the English Civil War. The territory was divided into East and West Jersey, with East Jersey developing more rapidly. The cultural divide between North and South Jersey today reflects this historical division. The video is produced by Kean University and the New Jersey Historical Commission.
