The tundra is the coldest biome, characterized by low temperatures, short growing seasons, and minimal precipitation, mostly as snow or ice. The soil contains permafrost, a permanently frozen layer. Plants in the tundra are adapted to absorb solar energy and grow quickly during the short growing season. They often grow close to the ground and use snow for insulation. Animals in the tundra have thick fur or feathers and blubber for insulation. Many animals migrate to the tundra only during milder conditions, and white fur or feathers provide camouflage against the snow.
