Atoms are extremely small and consist of a nucleus made of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons. The nucleus is tiny compared to the atom's overall size, which is mostly empty space. Protons and neutrons have similar masses, while electrons are much lighter. The mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus. Protons are positively charged, neutrons are neutral, and electrons are negatively charged, resulting in a neutral overall charge for the atom. The number of protons equals the number of electrons, while the number of neutrons can vary without affecting the atom's charge.
