This SciShow episode, hosted by Hank Green, explores the presence of demodex mites on human skin. These microscopic arachnids, related to spiders and ticks, live around hair follicles and oil glands. Humans host two species: demodex folliculorum and demodex brevis. We acquire them through early contact with other humans. Mites thrive in oily areas like eyebrows and noses, feeding on sebum. While generally harmless, an overabundance can contribute to skin conditions like eczema and rosacea due to bacteria in their waste. Despite this, there's no need for concern, as these mites have coexisted with humans for ages.
