Polio is close to being eradicated, with the virus only present in a small region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The World Health Organization aims to eliminate it by the end of 2023. However, new polio vaccines are being developed because the original virus isn't the only concern. Previous oral vaccines sometimes mutated into a communicable form, causing outbreaks in areas with low vaccination rates. Although rare, this mutated virus is a risk. Researchers have created three new oral vaccines using engineered viral strains that do not revert to a dangerous form, enhancing vaccination efforts in affected regions.
