In 1917, the US maintained neutrality in WWI, partly due to Germany's temporary halt of unrestricted submarine warfare. However, as the British blockade pressured the Central Powers, Germany considered resuming this tactic, risking US involvement. To counter this, Germany sent the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, proposing an alliance against the US. The British intercepted and shared the telegram, angering the American public. This, along with the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare, led to the US entering WWI.
