Red-eyed tree frogs in Panama use a shaking behavior called tribulation to communicate dominance and territory among males. Researchers, using infrared cameras and Robo frogs, discovered this behavior, which had been previously unnoticed due to the frogs' different reactions under white light. These frogs, found from southern Mexico to northern South America, have vivid scarlet eyes and neon green bodies to deter predators. The shaking vibrations are crucial for communication, even when the recipient frog is not in view. The study suggests that vibrational signaling might be common among other rainforest vertebrates.
