In the mid-19th century, Charles Brace initiated the orphan train movement to relocate orphaned and impoverished children from New York City to rural areas across America for adoption. Over 75 years, more than 200,000 children were placed in new homes. Brace's efforts laid the foundation for modern foster care. The program had varied outcomes, with some children achieving success and others facing challenges. The orphan trains ceased in the 1920s as new child welfare laws were enacted.
