Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, holding over 60% of Earth's fresh water. Its interior is inhospitable, but the surrounding Southern Ocean supports a rich ecosystem. Krill are vital, feeding whales, seals, penguins, and birds. Six penguin species breed here, including the Adelie and Emperor. Recent expeditions have discovered new species like giant sea spiders and carnivorous sponges. Over 30 scientific stations study climate change, tracking warming patterns and ice mass shrinkage. Despite its remoteness, much of the Southern Ocean remains unexplored.
