In May 2007, Ehud Netzer and his team announced the discovery of what they believe to be Herod's tomb. Although lacking an inscription with Herod's name, the evidence is compelling. The tomb's royal quality, its location in the only complex in Judea named after Herod, and historical accounts from Josephus support the claim. The red sarcophagus, likely Herod's, was intentionally smashed, possibly by Jewish rebels who despised Herod. The minimal weathering of the tomb's stones suggests it stood for only 60 years before being destroyed, aligning with the timeline of the Jewish revolt against Rome. Netzer's team concludes that Herod was the only Judean of his time deserving such a burial.
