In June 2004, biologist J Michael Fay embarked on a 60,000-mile aerial expedition across Africa, known as the Mega Flyover, to study the impact of humans on diverse ecosystems. Motivated by the rapid degradation of natural environments, Fay aimed to reconcile human activity with ecosystem preservation. The expedition, part of the WCS Human Footprint Project, involved detailed observations of eco regions using digital equipment and high-resolution photography. Despite finding many stressed ecosystems, Fay remains optimistic about Africa's potential to protect its environment. He hopes the data collected will influence global policy on natural resource management.
