Palmares was a significant maroon community in 1600s Brazil, formed by escaped slaves. It grew into a powerful confederation with a population over 10,000, constantly at war with colonial forces. Despite biased historical records, Palmares' story is pieced together by historians. The community was self-sufficient, trading with settlers and resisting Portuguese attacks. Ganga-Zumba and later Zumbi led Palmares, with Zumbi rejecting a peace treaty and continuing resistance. Though Palmares eventually fell, its legacy endures, celebrated in Brazil as the Day of Black Consciousness.
