Galileo Galilei, born in 1564, was an Italian astronomer and mathematician who initially studied medicine but shifted to mathematics. He gained recognition for his work on motion and centers of gravity. In 1609, he built a telescope, discovering Jupiter's moons and Saturn's shape. His support for Copernican theory led to conflict with the church, resulting in house arrest. Despite this, he continued his studies until his death in 1642.
