In the 19th century, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison competed for control of the American electricity market. Edison initially dominated with direct current (DC), but it had limitations in energy transmission over long distances. Tesla introduced alternating current (AC), which could transmit power over greater distances. Edison launched a smear campaign against AC, even funding the development of the electric chair to associate AC with danger. Despite his efforts, AC became the primary form of electrical supply, cementing Tesla's legacy in the War of Currents.
