Lions, often called the King of the Jungle, primarily inhabit savannas and grasslands. They are the second largest cats after tigers, weighing up to 400 pounds. Lions live in groups called prides, with females hunting and males protecting. They are carnivores and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Male lions have manes for protection during fights. Lions can run up to 50 mph but lack stamina. Their roars can be heard from 5 miles away. Most lions live in Africa, where Swahili is spoken, and the word for lion is 'Simba'.
