Polar bears inhabit Arctic regions, living on ice floes and near water. They are excellent swimmers, aided by their thick fur and blubber, which keep them warm in icy waters. Polar bears have a keen sense of smell for hunting. While adults are solitary, young bears enjoy social play. They are much larger than lions and tigers, with small ears and tails, and large feet that act as snowshoes. Their paws have pads for gripping ice, and their fur is thick and waterproof. Beneath their fur, polar bears have black skin to absorb sunlight.
