Finland, Olavinlinna Castle

Lena Castle, a 15th-century fortress in Savolina, Finland, is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing. Built on an island in the Kieron Salmi Strait, it was founded by Eric Axelson in 1475 as St. Olivesburg. The castle was strategically located to assert Swedish claims against Russia. It features thick circular towers designed to withstand cannon fire. Over time, the castle evolved, with parts collapsing and being rebuilt. Today, it hosts museums and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and it inspired the fictional Cropile Castle in Tintin.
