Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is a small city in a region about the size of England but with a much smaller population. Sarawak recently held elections to choose a government that will lead it to independence as part of the Federation of Malaysia. The population is mainly Dayaks, with Malays and Chinese minorities. Sarawak is a challenging area for democracy due to its equatorial jungle and swampy terrain. It has been under British protection since 1888 and became a colony in 1946. The majority of its people support joining Malaysia, as evidenced by the election results.
