Reptiles are a group of vertebrate animals that differ from amphibians by laying eggs on land and living entirely on land. They are ectotherms with lungs and thick, scaly skin that prevents dehydration. Historically, reptiles, including dinosaurs, dominated the Earth. Today, there are about 7,000 species, including turtles, crocodiles, lizards, and snakes. Some, like rattlesnakes, have venom to paralyze or kill prey.
