Doomsday seed bank welcomes new addition

The Svalbard Seed Vault, located in the remote archipelago of Svalbard, is a secure facility designed to preserve plant seeds from around the world. It is carved into a mountain's permafrost at 130 meters above sea level, providing protection from climate changes. The vault consists of three chambers connected by a 93.3-meter tunnel, with a constant temperature of -18 degrees Celsius to ensure seed preservation. Seeds are stored in vacuum and heat-sealed packages, with each envelope containing 500 seeds. Currently, the vault houses approximately 820,000 seed samples from various global sources.
