Initially allies, De Montfort and the king fell out over debts. De Montfort led the barons in drafting the Provisions of Oxford to limit royal power. After returning from France, he led a rebellion, defeating the king at the Battle of Lewes and establishing a new government. However, his victory was short-lived as he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Evesham. Despite his death, De Montfort became a martyr, and his legacy as the 'father of Parliament' endured.
