Grasslands cover a quarter of the mainland and are found on every continent except Antarctica. They are mainly located in Africa, Asia, and North America, with some in South America and Australia. Tropical savannas have two seasons, while temperate grasslands experience extreme temperatures and less rainfall. North American prairies support herds and have little shelter for predators and prey. Historically, 60 million bison roamed these prairies, but hunting and habitat loss reduced their numbers. Conservation efforts have helped bison populations recover, contributing to the biodiversity of the prairies.
