Clara Brown was born into slavery in Virginia in 1803. After being separated from her family, she worked as a house servant for 21 years. Upon gaining freedom in 1856, she moved to Central City, Colorado, during the Gold Rush. There, she established a successful laundry business, invested in real estate, and supported the local Christian community. Despite financial difficulties in the 1880s, her community supported her. She reunited with her daughter in 1884 and became the first woman in the Society of Colorado Pioneers before passing away in 1885.
