The Essenes, a Jewish sect, lived in poverty and sought spiritual enlightenment by avoiding worldly pleasures. They were vegetarians, did not marry, and forbade anger. They studied sacred texts and safeguarded secrets. During the Jewish revolt, fearing a Roman invasion, they hid their manuscripts in caves. In 1946, Bedouin shepherds discovered these scrolls, now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, which provide insight into the Essenes' beliefs and practices.
