Robert E. Lee was born to a prominent family and excelled in his education, graduating second in his class at West Point. He began his military career with engineering projects and served in the Mexican-American War. The 1850s were challenging for Lee, but he gained recognition after quelling John Brown's raid. During the Civil War, Lee led the Confederate Army, achieving significant victories but ultimately surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant. After the war, he was forgiven and became president of Washington College, where he served until his death in 1870.
