The government increased security across Egypt due to political violence that resulted in over 200 deaths in the past month. On the same day, a Cairo court ordered Morsi's detention for alleged involvement in attacks linked to Hamas and a 2011 jailbreak. The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the detention as a vendetta by the former Mubarak regime. Morsi, held in a secret location since his removal on July 3, will remain in preventive detention for up to 15 days.
