In 1928, the Goodyear Zeppelin company began constructing massive airships, costing over $7 million. These airships, including the Akron, were designed to be 785 feet long and powered by eight 560 horsepower engines. The Akron was christened by President Hoover's wife in 1931 and was noted for its size, being almost twice as large as Germany's Graf Zeppelin.
