John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, was elected to Congress in 1964 and became the longest-serving black member in congressional history. He played a significant role in founding the Congressional Black Caucus and chaired the House Judiciary Committee. Conyers was instrumental in passing key legislation, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, and the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday. He retired in 2017 amid allegations of sexual harassment and is survived by his wife and two sons.
