The president of the International Federation of the Red Cross visited coastal areas in Ecuador affected by the April 16 earthquake. Tadateru Konoe noted that reconstruction will take time. The Red Cross has launched an international appeal to raise $19 million for humanitarian aid for 100,000 affected individuals, with 30% already received by the Ecuadorian Red Cross. The aid should ideally be in the form of construction materials or financial assistance. According to Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, the earthquake resulted in 673 deaths, nine missing persons, over 6,000 injuries, and nearly 7,000 destroyed buildings. It was the third deadliest earthquake in Latin America in the last 15 years.
