In 1959, Luna 3 sent back images of the moon's far side, revealing what Earth had never seen. The moon's synchronous rotation means we only see one side, a result of its formation from an asteroid impact and gravitational interactions with Earth. Initially, the moon's spin and orbit were not aligned, but Earth's gravity synchronized them over time. The moon's elliptical orbit and tilted axis allow us to see slightly more than one side, but 41% remains hidden. Satellites have mapped the unseen areas, but our view of the moon is still limited.
