During the War of 1812, the British burned part of the U.S. capital, including the Library of Congress. To help Thomas Jefferson with his debts, Congress purchased his extensive private library, which became the foundation of the modern Library of Congress. Jefferson insisted that all his books be taken, as he believed all knowledge was valuable to legislators. With the funds from the sale, Jefferson ordered more books from England, replenishing and expanding his collection.
