The nervous system enables rapid communication and integration within the body and with the environment. It uses electrical signals, or nerve impulses, carried by neurons. The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of nerves and ganglia. Nerve fibers can be sensory or motor, and mixed nerves contain both. Cranial nerves connect the brain to the head and neck, while spinal nerves link the spinal cord to the trunk and limbs. The PNS is divided into somatic and visceral systems, with the latter also known as the autonomic nervous system, controlling involuntary actions.
