The 1824 presidential election was a contested race between John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson. Despite winning the popular vote, Jackson did not secure enough electoral votes, leading the decision to the House of Representatives. Henry Clay, Speaker of the House, supported Adams, who then appointed Clay as Secretary of State, sparking accusations of a 'corrupt bargain.' This led to a split in the Republican Party, with Jackson's supporters forming the Democratic Party. Jackson's popularity grew, and he won the presidency in 1828.
